The Absurdities of Evolution

'The Absurdities of Evolution' is a vigorous critique of evolutionary theory written from a conservative Christian perspective during the height of the fundamentalist-modernist controversy. Guy Fitch Phelps presents a series of arguments intended to expose what he perceives as the logical and scientific failures of Darwinian thought. By contrasting evolutionary concepts with biblical accounts of creation, the work seeks to provide a definitive defense of traditional faith against the emerging scientific paradigms of the early 20th century. The text delves into the philosophical and moral implications of evolutionary theory, arguing that such a worldview undermines the spiritual dignity of humanity. Phelps utilizes a blend of rhetorical inquiry and theological conviction to challenge the evidence for natural selection and common descent, reflecting the intense intellectual friction between religious institutions and secular academia of his time. This work serves as a significant primary source for understanding the historical development of anti-evolutionary thought in America.Readers interested in the history of religion and science, Christian apologetics, and the cultural shifts of the 1920s will find 'The Absurdities of Evolution' to be an illuminating exploration of a pivotal era in religious discourse. It remains an essential document for those studying the persistent tensions between creationist viewpoints and biological science. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
