Nhà văn Cung Tích Biền được độc giả Việt Nam biết đến như một tên tuổi quen thuộc của văn chương Miền Nam Việt Nam vào những thập niên 60,70. Ông nổi tiếng qua nhiều tác phẩm, truyện dài, truyện ngắn xuất hiện thường xuyên trên các tạp chí văn học. Sau 1975, Cung Tích Biền nghỉ viết một thời gian dài, để rồi vào những năm cuối của thập niên 80, ông xuất hiện trở lại trên văn đàn. Văn chương của ông, một lần nữa lại được đón nhận nồng nhiệt. Tập truyện Thằng Bắt Quỷ gồm 11 truyện ngắn, viết trước và sau 1975. Nội dung phản ảnh sâu sắc và trung thực một xã hội tối tăm, một khí hậu lịch sử cháy bỏng của chiến tranh, huynh đệ tương tàn, cốt nhục chia lìa trên giới ranh tử sinh ý thức hệ chính trị, nhưng văn chương và chữ nghĩa của Cung Tích Biền trong tập truyện không hề là con tin của chính trị.
