Nieves Alberola investiga en este libro sobre el estado que puede determinarse como sujeto postmoderno ante las constantes llamadas de atención por parte de filósofos y sociólogos sobre su posible desaparición. A través de la lectura de la filosofía de Friedrich Nietzsche, Martin Heidegger, Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari, Michel Foucault, Ludwig Wittgenstein, o en las obras de sociólogos tales como Gilles Lipovetsky o Jean Baudrillard plantea que el sujeto existe, pero se encuentra totalmente fragmentado. De este modo recorre des de la Antigüedad Clásica hasta el siglo XX pero centrando la atención sobre todo en el paso de la Época de la Ilustración a la de las filosofías estructuralistas y postestructuralista.
