Sedierungen werden in der Medizin häufig durchgeführt. Eine Sonderform ist die terminale Sedierung bis zum Tod. Hierunter versteht man die medikamentöse Trübung des Bewusstseins bei einem Patienten, dessen Leiden anders nicht beherrschbar scheint. Sie gilt, wenn sie richtig indiziert und durchgeführt wird, als eine ethisch nicht fragwürdige Maßnahme. Unter einer Tötung auf Verlangen, auch aktive Sterbehilfe genannt, wird das Spritzen einer tödlichen Substanz verstanden, mit dem Ziel einen Menschen zu töten. Sie ist in Deutschland verboten (§216 StGB), in anderen Ländern, z.B. den Niederlanden, jedoch unter bestimmten Umständen erlaubt. In diesem Buch sollen die Ähnlichkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen einer terminalen Sedierung und der aktiven Sterbehilfe herausgearbeitet werden. Es wird der Frage nachgegangen, ob die terminale Sedierung als ethisch akzeptable Variante einer Hilfe im Sterben verstanden werden kann, wenn die aktive Sterbehilfe als ethisch nicht akzeptabel bezeichnet wird. Ist wirklich die eine Maßnahme immer gut und die andere stets verwerflich?
