Este artigo apresenta a questão do sofrimento como um problema universal com o qual a humanidade tem lutado desde a antiguidade até os dias de hoje. A tentativa do homem de responder às dificuldades impostas pelo sofrimento levou ao desenvolvimento de várias teologias do sofrimento. O artigo examina diferentes escolas de pensamento relacionadas ao sofrimento, incluindo: a visão grega e helenística, as visões medievais, as visões tradicionais africanas, as visões islâmicas, as visões secularistas e o cristianismo bíblico. O estudo observa que algumas das escolas de pensamento excluem Deus em relação à questão do sofrimento. Em particular, vemos que a teologia grega e helenística sobre o sofrimento e as abordagens seculares do sofrimento tendem a não envolver Deus em questões relacionadas ao sofrimento. As visões tradicionais africanas atribuem o sofrimento inteiramente a agentes humanos e espíritos e menos a Deus, enquanto a visão de mundo islâmica assume uma posição extrema ao tratar a questão do sofrimento diretamente com Alá e, em menor grau, com o homem. No cristianismo bíblico, encontramos um Deus que sofre na pessoa de Cristo, pois Jesus Cristo lamentava a miséria dos outros. Vemos Deus envolvido na aflição do homem.
