Le livre étudie la constitution de Virmond, une colonie d’immigrants polonais fondée au début du 20e siècle. Il s’intéresse à la relation possible entre l’Église catholique et la formation de l’identité, et à la manière dont cette relation a marqué la vie des habitants, en établissant des pratiques et des savoirs. Pour comprendre cela, il est nécessaire d’établir des liens avec les changements survenus au sein de l’Église catholique à cette époque, tels que la romanisation du catholicisme et l’affirmation de l’Église catholique au Brésil. La religiosité présente chez les immigrants, avec le désir de continuer à exercer leur foi, serait présente à la maison, à l’école et dans l’ensemble de la communauté. La colonisation des immigrés soulève des questions telles que les identités individuelles et collectives, la permanence et le changement, ainsi que la construction de la mémoire. Grâce à des entretiens avec des immigrés polonais et leurs descendants (histoire orale) et à l’utilisation de publications de l’époque, on peut constater que la foi catholique, la nationalité et le désir de construire une nouvelle vie tout en conservant la polonité sont les liens qui structurent l’identité de la colonie.
