Este livro foi concebido como uma contribuição para a apresentação de um panorama geral e um balanço das pesquisas arqueológicas realizadas no vale médio do rio Cauca, após vários anos de trabalho e constantes contribuições para o conhecimento pré-hispânico da área. No entanto, seu objetivo não é resolver os debates teóricos, conceituais e metodológicos atuais, mas sim apontar, através de uma revisão criteriosa dos resultados dos esforços de pesquisa realizados até o momento desta publicação, os avanços e desafios para o trabalho arqueológico nesta zona cultural, com ênfase naqueles relacionados à Hoya del Quindío. Em última instância, pretende-se que seja um texto de referência para futuros estudos sobre o Quindío pré-hispânico.
