Tendo em vista que a Amazônia sempre foi uma região estratégica para o Estado brasileiro, desde o último quartel do século XX foi inserida na agenda de segurança internacional com a alegação do aumento das preocupações dos países centrais quanto às mudanças climáticas globais. A tarefa de pensar o espaço amazônico numa perspectiva geopolítica tornou-se algo mais complexo e polêmico. De um lado, uma aliança de interesses entre países e grupos não governamentais em torno da defesa da Amazônia Indígena e da preservação das florestas, mas que paradoxalmente mantém intactos os interesses das grandes corporações de exploração mineral, muitas delas financiadas por Estados de países centrais que vociferam contra as políticas desenvolvimentistas do Estado brasileiro na região. De outro lado, o atual governo brasileiro e os velhos interesses geopolíticos de desenvolvimento da região, que demandam explorar ao máximo os recursos naturais de um dos últimos fundos territoriais do planeta. A bem da verdade, esses interesses desenvolvimentistas permaneceram no seio do governo mesmo na Nova República, como atestam os Eixos de Integração e Desenvolvimento (EID), a IIRSA (Iniciativa para a Integração da Infraestrutura Regional Sul-Americana) e as mudanças no Código Florestal. 10
