So kommt es auf jeden individuell an, ob er eine Erfindung braucht oder nicht.'(Josephine Valeske, 2011)Die Entwicklungspfade von Technologien sind durch Erwartungen, Nutzungsszenarien und Leitbilder geprägt, die sich allerdings immer wieder verändern. Um diese Trajektorien zu beschreiben kann es sinnvoll sein, eine Momentaufnahme von Technologien zu tätigen und eine kontemporäre Definition für technik-basierende soziale Phänomen zu formulieren. Dies geschieht im Rahmen dieses Essays in Bezug auf Social Media. Das wirklich Neue an dieser Kommunikationsform wird in diesem Essay in wenigen Worten anhand der Architektur von Social Media und der Digitalisierung von Beziehungen aufgezeigt. Letztendlich wird ein Definitionsversuch von Social Media unternommen, der eine Nutzer- und eine Technik-orientierte Perspektive vereinigen soll.
