Este volumen es el fruto de la colaboración del grupo de investigadores del Instituto de Estudios Ibéricos e Iberoamericanos de la Universidad de Varsovia y los del Centro de Investigación de Semiótica Literaria, Teatral y Nuevas Tecnologías del Departamento de Literatura Española y Teoría de la Literatura de la Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED, Madrid). A los investigadores del libro les une el común interés por el fenómeno del teatro sobre el teatro y el teatro dentro del teatro, así como por algunas formas metateatrales que derivan de este último. Se trata, asimismo, de formas en sí recurrentes que van desde el teatro español del Siglo de Oro hasta el de la Edad de Plata, que se reviven en el teatro de vanguardia de la posguerra española y luego en las corrientes posmodernas hasta llegar a nuestros días. Todos los trabajos se apoyan en unas bien definidas bases teórico-metodológicas cuyas raíces se hallan en los estudios de los más eminentes teóricos del metateatro, desde Lionel Abel, Richard Hornby, Tadeusz Kowzan, Manfred Schmeling y Patrice Pavis, sin olvidar a los españoles y polacos.
