A única herança de Tarwa: a marca real indelével gravada na palma esquerda, símbolo de linhagem e perda.Ainda bebé, Tarwa é levado para o sul pela mãe e por Chamboko, o servo mais fiel do rei, até à terra de Chiweshe - a terra natal de Chamboko. Criado numa machamba de tabaco, Tarwa fica órfão aos quinze anos. Temendo a feitiçaria que assombra aquelas terras, Chamboko envia-o para Salisbury, onde Tarwa constrói uma vida modesta trabalhando para os colonos.
