Thomas Wentworth Higginson’s Tales of the Enchanted Islands of the Atlantic explores the enduring fascination with mythical islands said to exist in the Atlantic Ocean. Drawing from a mix of historical records, folklore, and sailors’ tales, Higginson examines legends such as Atlantis, Antillia, and the Isle of St. Brendan. He presents these stories not merely as fantasies, but as reflections of human curiosity, hope, and the desire to believe in hidden worlds beyond the known horizon. His writing blends scholarly research with a sense of wonder, inviting readers to consider how myth and history often intertwine.Throughout the work, Higginson highlights how these enchanted islands appeared on early maps and in explorers’ accounts, sometimes treated as real destinations despite lacking concrete evidence. He traces how belief in such places influenced voyages during the Age of Exploration, shaping decisions and fueling ambitions. The book emphasizes how uncertainty and limited geographic knowledge allowed imagination to flourish, turning the Atlantic into a space where the boundary between reality and legend was often blurred.Ultimately, Higginson’s work reflects on the broader human tendency to create myths to fill gaps in understanding. The enchanted islands symbolize both the limits of knowledge and the power of storytelling across cultures and generations. By examining these legends, Higginson not only preserves intriguing historical narratives but also encourages readers to appreciate the role of imagination in shaping how people perceive the world.About The AuthorThomas Wentworth Higginson (1823-1911) was an American author, minister, abolitionist, and soldier.
