Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die Phase des südamerikanischen Regionalismus im 21. Jahrhundert zu analysieren. Anhand von Literaturrecherchen zu Theorien der Internationalen Beziehungen (realistisch), der Politischen Ökonomie (strukturalistisch), der Internationalen Politischen Ökonomie und der Geopolitik (klassisch) wurde eine historische Analyse der Suche Lateinamerikas nach externer Autonomie und interner kapitalistischer Entwicklung erstellt, die sich um die Konstruktion eines geografischen Bewusstseins dreht, das sich seit der Kolonisierung herausgebildet hat und sich in folgenden Bereichen entfalten wird: 1) in politischen Initiativen zum Aufbau einer unabhängigen territorialen Einheit im 19. Jahrhundert und 2) in einer breiteren regionalen Identität, die Brasilien hinzufügt; 3) in wirtschaftlichen Integrationsprojekten und -institutionen im 20. Jahrhundert; 4) und in der dritten Phase des Regionalismus im 21. Jahrhundert, die politische Projekte jenseits der Wirtschaft rettet, die aber angesichts einer ungünstigen externen Konjunktur verblasst. Auf dieser Grundlage konnten wir die dritte Phase des südamerikanischen Regionalismus und seinen Übergang zu einer neuen neoliberalen regionalen Agenda verstehen.
