O autor das páginas seguintes lembra bem sua primeira introdução a estes assuntos, e seu desejo de obter exatamente aquilo que ele sentia que ainda não havia extraído dos livros então existentes, por mais ricamente e sabiamente construído. Alguns destes, que têm sido fonte de grande satisfação desde então, eram então demasiado pesados e pesados, enquanto outros não continham o satisfatório pragmatismo desejado.
