Es gibt keine vorgegebene Moral, die das Leben als gut oder schlecht definiert; Vielmehr werden menschliche Erfahrungen durch individuelle Entscheidungen und persönliche Überzeugungen geprägt. Samuel Beckett, der stark vom existentialistischen Denken beeinflusst war, postulierte, dass die menschliche Existenz in einer Welt, die von Chaos und Unordnung beherrscht wird, in erster Linie ein Konstrukt des Geistes ist. Für Beckett besteht die Außenwelt lediglich aus flüchtigen und fragmentierten Illusionen, unzusammenhängenden Bildern, die nur dazu dienen, von der tieferen Realität des menschlichen Denkens abzulenken. Seine Stücke spiegeln diese Philosophie wider und präsentieren Charaktere und Schauplätze, die von einem überwältigenden Gefühl der Leere erfüllt sind. In dieser Leere wird dem Publikum kein Sinn gegeben, sondern es ist stattdessen gezwungen, danach zu suchen und Bedeutung aus dem zu ziehen, was auf den ersten Blick wie ein Nichts erscheint.
