Un microlitro (1/30.000 di oncia) di sangue contiene normalmente da 4 a 6 milioni di globuli rossi, da 5.000 a 10.000 globuli bianchi e da 150.000 a 500.000 piastrine. Per garantire la qualità, la sicurezza e l’efficacia del sangue e dei prodotti ematici, è essenziale disporre di centri ematologici ben attrezzati, con infrastrutture adeguate e personale qualificato. Pertanto, la necessità di modificare e cambiare il servizio di trasfusione sanguigna ha reso indispensabile la formulazione di una politica nazionale sul sangue e lo sviluppo di un programma nazionale sul sangue che garantisca anche l’attuazione delle direttive della Corte Suprema dell’India del 1996.
