Der Ionenaustausch ist ein natürliches Phänomen, das ständig in anorganischen Substanzen und in lebenden Körpern auf der Erdoberfläche auftritt. Die Ionenaustauschreaktion lässt sich am besten als Austausch von Ionen zwischen einer festen Phase und einer den Feststoff umgebenden Flüssigkeit beschreiben. Das Funktionsprinzip eines Kationenaustauscherharzes besteht aus negativ geladenen funktionellen Gruppen, die auf dem Polymergerüst fixiert sind und unerwünschte Kationen durch die gewünschten ersetzen. Die Methode der Ionenaustauscherharze ist in der heutigen Forschung sehr nützlich.
