Die Sorge um die Auswirkungen der globalen Erwärmung durch die fortwährende Ausbeutung nicht erneuerbarer fossiler Brennstoffe und die Knappheit bei der Stromerzeugung beschleunigt die Suche nach alternativen Energiequellen. Die Entwicklung einer mikrobiellen Brennstoffzelle unter Verwendung von im Abwasser vorhandenen Mikroben ist ein neuartiger Ansatz zur Bewältigung dieser Herausforderung. Neben der Erzeugung von Biostrom fungiert sie auch als Biosensor. Während des Prozesses, bei dem Strom erzeugt wird, verstoffwechseln die Mikroben die im Abwasser vorhandenen organischen Stoffe. Im Laufe der Zeit wird das Abwasser mit Chlorella vulgaris behandelt, um etwa 50 Prozent des im Wasser vorhandenen Phosphats zu entfernen. Die erzeugte Strommenge hat sich erhöht. Die so gewonnene Biomasse kann zur Herstellung von Biokraftstoff genutzt werden. Zur weiteren Reinigung dieses behandelten Abwassers wird ein neuartiges Verfahren zur Behandlung mit Strychnos potatorum-Samen (Chilla Ginjalu) erprobt.
