A enfermagem é uma profissão de cuidados de saúde centrada na prestação de cuidados pormenorizados a indivíduos, famílias e comunidades com vista à obtenção, manutenção e recuperação de um estado de saúde e funcionamento óptimos. Atualmente, a profissão de enfermeiro é melhor do que era no passado. No passado, o público identificava os enfermeiros mais com a profissão de professor do que com a de prestador de serviços. No entanto, os serviços dos enfermeiros são mais reconhecidos nos hospitais de alta tecnologia ou de superespecialidade e muito menos nos enfermeiros que prestam serviço nas zonas rurais ou na saúde pública. O governo não está a dar a devida importância à disponibilização de instalações para os enfermeiros que prestam serviço nas zonas rurais. Mas o seu valor de retenção no emprego aumenta devido ao stress relacionado com o trabalho.
