Negli ultimi 25 anni è cresciuto l’interesse per gli effetti negativi e positivi dello stress nelle persone che lavorano come assistenti. Gli studi precedenti hanno preso in esame gruppi quali terapeuti, assistenti sociali, medici e infermieri. Tuttavia, i volontari che prestano assistenza sono stati in gran parte trascurati nella letteratura empirica. La maggior parte delle ricerche relative allo stress e ai rifugiati ha esaminato le condizioni psicologiche dei rifugiati come conseguenza degli eventi traumatici della loro vita e della loro esistenza in esilio. Tuttavia, gli operatori umanitari, i professionisti della risposta alle emergenze, i volontari e altre persone che lavorano con i rifugiati per un certo periodo di tempo o ascoltano le loro terribili esperienze possono sviluppare un trauma secondario. Essendo persone compassionevoli e motivate principalmente da idee altruistiche, i volontari che lavorano con i rifugiati potrebbero essere maggiormente a rischio tra questi gruppi. La presente indagine ha dato uno dei primi contributi alla ricerca sui volontari che assistono i rifugiati e può stimolare lo sviluppo di nuove ipotesi e creare piattaforme per future ricerche.
