As the son of Irish immigrant parents, in a household marked by alcoholism and violence yet suffused with love, the author confronts issues of identity, displacement, forgiveness and home. In struggling to label the conflicting feelings within his own personal history, he tries to become a caring parent to his own children, discovering along the way the saving power of language and art.
