Trattasi di un manuale di storia della Chiesa cattolica: la trattazione abbraccia l’intera storia della Chiesa in relazione al potere temporale. E’ il frutto di una tesi di perfezionamento post-lauream in Storia (master), per la realizzazione del quale sono stati proficui non soltanto gli studi universitari e post-universitari, ma anche la partecipazione a numerosi convegni in materia e gli studi effettuati presso il triennio superiore fondamentale di Teologia. E’ una trattazione cronologica arricchita da un’accurata selezione di documenti. Particolare attenzione è stata prestata al problema della Riforma protestante e della Controriforma o 'Riforma cattolica'. Gli ultimi pontificati sono stati vagliati più a livello di cronaca che non di analisi storica, per ovvi motivi di 'contemporaneità' degli eventi. Nessun periodo storico è stato comunque trascurato e per questo il presente studio può essere un ausilio utile ed efficiente al tempo stesso per chiunque voglia affrontare questa materia.
