Das Steuerungssystem für Flüssigdestillationssäulen über das Internet mit iLab Shared Architecture wurde an der UDSM entwickelt. Die Flüssigdestillationssäule ist ein Forschungsinstrument, das ursprünglich manuell betrieben wurde, was bedeutet, dass der Benutzer die Temperatur manuell aufzeichnen und überwachen muss, was eine hohe Belastung für den Benutzer darstellt. Da die durchgeführten Experimente aufgrund der Verwendung von Chemikalien, die auf sehr hohe Temperaturen erhitzt werden, gesundheitsgefährdend sind, war außerdem eine Fernzugriffsmöglichkeit auf das System erforderlich, um einen direkten Kontakt mit der Destillationskolonne zu vermeiden. Die möglichen Lösungen für die bestehenden Probleme waren die Implementierung einer über das Internet zugänglichen und ferngesteuerten Destillationskolonne unter Verwendung der Ilab Shared Architecture.
