The topic of youth cultures and the role played by the body, its representation and various bodily practices in the process of identity formation during adolescence is of particular significance, especially in today’s society. This raises the question of the extent to which the way in which youth cultures engage with the body influences the process of identity formation in adolescence. During adolescence, young people have a heightened interest in interacting with their peers. Through socialisation, the individual develops an identity, and by participating in youth cultures, young people find points of reference that enable them to construct an identity. Alongside the search for identity, the body also represents a developmental challenge during adolescence, which is why the body’s role as a medium of identity plays an important function for young people.
