Die Statistische Thermodynamik bildet eine Brücke zwischen den universellen, aber makroskopisch-phänomenologischen Gesetzen der Thermodynamik und den mechanischen bzw. quantenmechanischen Eigenschaften der molekularen Bausteine. Qualitative Betrachtungen über die Zusammenhänge zwischen der Entropie und der 'molekularen Unordnung' oder die Verteilung der Energie auf die einzelnen 'molekularen Freiheitsgrade' sind dem Chemiestudenten schon aus der Anfängervorlesung bekannt. Eine korrekte Darstellung dieser Zusammenhänge erfordert jedoch einen gewissen formalen Aufwand. Dieses Buch wurde als Einführungstext für Chemiestudenten mit begrenzten Mathematikkenntnissen geschrieben, für die es dennoch wichtig ist, die Methoden der Statistischen Thermodynamik zu verstehen und anwenden zu lernen.
