Die Studie versucht, die Räume der demokratischen Beteiligung der Schulgemeinschaft am Instituto Estadual de Educação de Santa Catarina, einer besonderen Einrichtung mit über 100-jähriger Geschichte in Florianópolis, im Zeitraum von 1985 bis 1995 zu verstehen und zu diskutieren. Es wurden Fragen zu den Aktivitäten und Prozessen der demokratischen Verfassung untersucht, die sich aus der direkten Beteiligung der Schulgemeinschaft an Entscheidungen ergaben, wobei die Hindernisse (Grenzen) und die fördernden Elemente (Möglichkeiten) dieser Beteiligung identifiziert wurden. In diesem Sinne wurden zur besseren Verständigung dieser Prozesse Konzepte wie Partizipation, Sozialkapital und symbolisches Kapital diskutiert.
