Zmiany te nie ominęły również niemieckiej branży hotelarskiej i sprawiły, że coraz więcej hoteli wykorzystuje Internet jako kanał sprzedaży do zawierania umów o zakwaterowanie. Również goście hotelowi, poprzez recenzje hoteli, wpisy na blogach lub na swoich profilach w mediach społecznościowych, pełnią obecnie rolę kanału dystrybucji. Ponadto podczas każdej przerwy reklamowej w telewizji liczne firmy, stosujące różne modele biznesowe - takie jak porównywarki cen hoteli czy ekskluzywne oferty hotelowe - rywalizują o przychylność konsumentów, zachęcając ich do rezerwacji kolejnego pobytu w hotelu za pośrednictwem swoich stron internetowych lub do znalezienia za ich pośrednictwem najkorzystniejszej oferty. Wszystkie te modele biznesowe nie funkcjonują jednak bez samych hoteli, które oferują swoje usługi za pośrednictwem tych kanałów dystrybucji. W tym kontekście pojawia się pytanie, jakie nowe możliwości biznesowe i zagrożenia stoją przed hotelarzem w związku ze sprzedażą usług hotelowych przez Internet.
