Os sprites, emissões ópticas transitórias na atmosfera média, foram descobertos acidentalmente em 1989. Desde então, inúmeras observações foram feitas para investigar os mecanismos desse fenômeno misterioso e sua relação com os relâmpagos e tempestades subjacentes. No entanto, ainda não se sabe por que algumas tempestades produzem sprites, enquanto outras não. Este livro, portanto, fornece uma análise abrangente sobre tempestades de verão que produzem sprites e outras que não produzem, utilizando múltiplos dados de radar Doppler, rede de localização de raios, TRMM, imagens de satélite MTSAT, NCEP e radiossonda. Embora este livro seja baseado em estudos de caso e não tenham sido encontradas diferenças significativas, a análise detalhada da atividade de raios, características dinâmicas, termodinâmicas e microfísicas das tempestades (com e sem sprites) será, esperamos, uma fonte valiosa de informação para investigadores interessados em lançar outra tentativa, ou qualquer outra pessoa que possa estar interessada em eletricidade atmosférica e previsão de sprites e relâmpagos, para que os seus efeitos prejudiciais sobre as pessoas, bens e sociedade possam ser prevenidos ou mitigados.
