W ciągu ostatnich 40 lat odnotowano stały wzrost odsetka kobiet w zawodzie stomatologa. W niniejszym badaniu zamierzaliśmy uzyskać wgląd w kwestie i problemy, które mają wpływ na charakterystykę pracy kobiet-stomatologów. Wiele badań wykazało, że istnieją różnice między płciami w wyborze specjalizacji, modelach praktyki i podejściu do zawodu; niektóre z nich ujawniły, że kobiety są bardziej zainteresowane podstawową opieką stomatologiczną niż innymi specjalizacjami stomatologicznymi. Wyraźnie widać również, że kobiety pracują mniej godzin, pracują w niepełnym wymiarze godzin i przyjmują mniej pacjentów niż mężczyźni, a także rzadziej prowadzą własną praktykę niż ich koledzy. Istnieje również różnica w dochodach netto między dentystami płci męskiej i żeńskiej. W badaniu tym zastosowaliśmy metodologię opisu jakościowego, w ramach której zrekrutowaliśmy celową próbę sześciu kobiet-dentystek z klinik stomatologicznych Montreal General Hospital w aglomeracji Montrealu w prowincji Quebec w Kanadzie. Wszystkie wywiady zostały w całości przepisane, a dane zostały przetworzone za pomocą oprogramowania NVivo vr.9 w celu ułatwienia analizy. Wyniki sugerują, że kobiety-dentystki uważają za wyzwanie pogodzenie obowiązków zawodowych z opieką nad dziećmi.
