Baruch de Spinoza (1632-1677) war ein niederländischer Philosoph und Sohn portugiesischer Immigranten sephardischer Herkunft und Portugiesisch als Muttersprache. Er wird dem Rationalismus zugeordnet und gilt als einer der Begründer der modernen Bibelkritik. Spinozas Konzept von rationaler Erkenntnis ist von einem ungetrübten, radikalen Optimismus bezüglich der Fähigkeiten des menschlichen Geistes gekennzeichnet. Er meinte, wir könnten nicht nur sämtliche Geheimnisse der Natur klären, sondern auch Gott adäquat erkennen: 'Die menschliche Seele hat eine adäquate Erkenntnis der ewigen und unendlichen Wesenheit Gottes.' Fritz Mauthner (1849-1923) war ein deutschsprachiger Philosoph und Schriftsteller.
