This book aims to address the specific nursing care requirements of patients with acute spinal cord injuries in intensive care units. It provides a brief insight into how the clinical picture of spinal cord injury is defined. It also addresses the special nursing care requirements in relation to spinal shock, autonomic dysreflexia, the respiratory situation, problems with the bladder and gastrointestinal tract, positioning, mobilisation and pressure ulcer prevention. The exceptional psychological situation in which the acutely paraplegic patient finds themselves is also discussed. The aim of this book is to provide an overview of the problems faced by patients with acute spinal cord injury and how to deal with them in order to provide the best possible care for the patient.
