Die Verwendung von Ultraschallwellen ist eine Möglichkeit zur Behandlung von Wasser, das mit toxischen und biologisch schwer abbaubaren Verbindungen belastet ist. Ziel dieser Studie war es, einen anionischen Farbstoff aus der Familie der Diazofarbstoffe, Reactive Black 5 (RB5), durch Sonolyse abzubauen. Um den sonochemischen Abbau von RB5 zu optimieren, wurden verschiedene Parameter untersucht, wie der anfängliche pH-Wert der Lösung, die anfängliche Konzentration des Farbstoffs, die Stärke der Ultraschallstrahlung, die Wirkung der Zugabe von Eisen(II)-Ionen und Wasserstoffperoxid. Der sonochemische Abbau von RB5 wurde durch Spektrophotometrie (UV/Vis) verfolgt. Die gefundenen Ergebnisse zeigen, dass nach 180 Minuten Behandlung eine Ausbeute von 73,8% erreicht wurde.
