Os sons e ruídos rodeiam-nos constantemente e têm uma forte influência na nossa saúde e bem-estar. No entanto, a sua investigação ainda está pouco desenvolvida, sobretudo nas dimensões sociais e políticas. Na maioria das vezes, o som da cidade só entra nos discursos da arquitetura e do planeamento na sua forma negativa, o ruído. No entanto, os sons estão sempre inseridos em estruturas sociais e políticas mais amplas, sendo indícios valiosos do caráter de uma sociedade urbana e da sua ordem interna. As paisagens sonoras urbanas continuam a ser moldáveis, como demonstrado por obras de arte acústicas. O presente trabalho investiga as lacunas atuais na investigação das disciplinas envolvidas e delineia as condições e a estrutura de uma investigação auditiva da cidade. Estas condições estão programaticamente estabelecidas na Agenda Auditiva. O seu estabelecimento contribuirá assim para uma nova compreensão do som urbano e abrirá novas possibilidades de design auditivo.
