Inspiration for things historical came from curiosity about a missing father, his maternal grandmother’s stories, multiple annual trips to the southern Arkansas Ouachita Mountains homestead of his ancestors and extended family, but a love of writing as well. Back in 1967, an Arkansas State College history professor added to that inspiration. He wrote: 'I spend so much time pushing the average student that the outstanding scholar may feel that his rewarding efforts have gone unnoticed.
