Das gemeinsame Merkmal der Somatoformen Störungen sind körperliche Beschwerden ohne hinreichende organische Ursache. Die Patienten suchen häufig viele Ärzte auf, da sie einen hohen Leidensdruck empfinden und die Diagnose unklar bleibt. Die Organmedizin ist aufgrund fehlender pathologischer Befunde weitgehend hilflos. Nach mehreren ergebnislosen Behandlungsversuchen mündet die Patientenkarriere häufig in Erwerbsunfähigkeit, womit enorme Folgekosten verbunden sind. Trotz der unbestrittenen gesundheitspolitischen Bedeutung sind grundlegende Fragen der Störungskonzeption weitgehend ungeklärt. Zielsetzung des vorliegenden Buchs ist es, die verschiedenen Konzeptionen zusammenzuführen und deren Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten sowie Implikationen für psychotherapeutisches und ärztliches Handeln aufzuzeigen.
