Un libro con dos destinos que se cruzan, son dos personajes muy diferentes. Sin embargo, se cruzarán, se amarán y se odiarán. La vida nunca es una carretera recta.Todo comienza en Laredo, una ciudad de Texas. Si cruzamos la calle, estamos en México. La elección de la ciudad no es baladí, el extranjero, o el futuro migrante, es tu vecino. A unos pasos de distancia, México ha establecido una nueva ciudad, la nueva Laredo. El migrante no recorrió miles de kilómetros a pie, vivía en la acera de enfrente a la suya.Alejandro es hijo de inmigrantes, sus padres son mexicanos y también vivía a unos cincuenta kilómetros de Laredo. Sorprende hablar de migrantes en Estados Unidos, aparte de los nativos americanos, todos los habitantes son migrantes o descendientes de migrantes. El término resalta el desprecio. Hablamos de italoamericanos, pero nunca de irlandesesamericanos. Rubia, ojos verdes, sin duda. Sus padres son de clase media, observan a México con empatía. Pero los hijos de inmigrantes del sur los exasperan. No quieren integrarse a la sociedad estadounidense. Viven en clanes, como lo harían los animales.Un día, ella está comiendo helado en un camino que no lleva a ninguna parte, probablemente en California, Alejandro se sienta a su lado, la molesta para que le dé un beso. Él decide que ella es su novia. Ella no responde, es tímida y no se atreve a imponerse.Unos días después la presentó a sus padres, ellos la invitaron a comer el próximo domingo. Ella no se atreve a decir que no.Una mañana aparece James. Priscilla lo ama, tiene granos y ella lo encuentra muy guapo. Alejandro se está volviendo loco. Ella entra en crisis. Sólo le queda un objetivo: ir a Laredo, a priori no es fácil.Mientras tanto, Priscilla se da cuenta de que en Laredo la vida se ha detenido. No vive nadie, ni siquiera un perro o un pájaro, sólo el viento y el calor están presentes. Salir de esta ciudad se convierte en una emergencia.
