Tourism is an economic activity that attracts the attention of government officials due to its capacity to generate income and employment. Given the natural potential of Northeast Brazil, national public policies have been encouraging, stimulating and accelerating the process of tourism development in this region, with the aim of boosting and strengthening local economies. In Pernambuco, the municipalities belonging to the Guadalupe Environmental Protection Area (APA) have been experimenting with various projects to expand tourism since the 1990s, such as the Costa Dourada Project, the Guadalupe Tourist Centre (CT) and the Northeast Tourism Development Programme (PRODETUR/NE). However, although environmental protection areas have specific regulations regarding the use and appropriation of their environmental resources, tourism is not geared towards environmental sustainability and conflicts of different kinds arise. This work analyses the main socio-environmental problems and conflicts arising from tourism in environmental protection areas, showing how the lack of sustainable planning directly affects people’s quality of life.
