Cette œuvre s’inscrit dans la tradition artistique des danses macabres, ou danses de la mort, de la période médiévale comprise entre la fin du XIVe siècle et le début du XVe siècle. Dans cette œuvre, la Mort fait tomber toutes les barrières sociales, culturelles, politiques, économiques et religieuses de la société. Elle réunit tous les personnages issus des différentes couches sociales dans un même temps et un même espace : le son de la Mort.Cette étude constitue une première approche visant à comprendre la genèse de l’œuvre ; elle aborde, d’une part, le contexte historico-social de la Castille médiévale (territoire où s’épanouit la danse castillane), et, d’autre part, à saisir les éléments généraux de sa composition littéraire qui définissent le caractère de la Mort lorsqu’elle dialogue avec chacun des personnages de la société médiévale.
