The objective of this study was to analyse some of the impacts of the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES) joining the Programme to Support the Expansion and Restructuring of Federal Universities (Reuni) on the Social Work course at this educational institution. It is argued that the creation and implementation of Reuni is part of the so-called counter-reform process in higher education and that its achievement implies changes to the professional profile that is desired for the Social Work category, the improvement of its competencies and skills, and the satisfactory implementation of the curriculum developed for the Social Work degree programme. The basis for this assertion is discussed in order to present, first, the elements of the counter-reform of the Brazilian State and higher education. Next, we seek to revisit the constitution of the current Social Work training programme so that, finally, in the last part of the work, we can present some data that highlight the transformations in professional training in Social Work at UFES.
