Tendo em conta a tendência para a diminuição da participação eleitoral - que, para muitos observadores eleitorais, atingiu um nível preocupante para a compreensão da democracia, especialmente nas eleições autárquicas -, a literatura científica discute vários fatores que podem ter um efeito positivo na participação eleitoral. Para além de medidas como a unificação das datas eleitorais ou o voto online, alguns reformistas propõem também o reforço da utilização de instrumentos de democracia direta. Este trabalho de licenciatura dedica-se à questão de saber se os processos que ocorrem no prazo de um ano antes das eleições para as câmaras municipais têm uma influência positiva a curto prazo na participação eleitoral. A análise é realizada com recurso ao método da diferença de diferenças e a dados dos Institutos Estaduais de Estatística da Baviera e de Baden-Württemberg, bem como de bases de dados sobre participação cidadã dos anos de 2007-2009 e 2013-2014, respetivamente.
