José Manuel Cuenca es uno de los historiadores con una bibliografía más amplia entre los que, en España, se han dedicado al estudio de los siglos XIX y XX, y, si hubiera que destacar algo más, sobresaldría desde luego su oceánico dominio de la historiografía ajena. Sus lecturas son tan amplias como es su biblioteca personal, casi un paradigma en la profesión, y, a esa ’voracidad’ lectora, le acompaña una memoria extraordinaria en el sentido literal de esta palabra. Este libro se sitúa en esa línea. Lo que constituye el núcleo de este volumen es el paradójico modo en que un régimen autoritario como el que subsistió hasta 1975 en España pudo ser permeable a una ideología como el marxismo. Parece una contradicción, pero fue así, y lo fue con la particularidad añadida -o con la explicación que lo hace razonable- de que, en gran medida, fueron hombres del propio Régimen y otros muy cercanos a él quienes protagonizaron ese hecho. 10
