Tradicionalmente atribuida a Don Pedro, obispo de Jaén entre 1296 y 1300, esta obra fue probablemente compuesta por un autor anónimo en la segunda mitad del siglo XIV con el fin de suministrar a los hombres de Iglesia argumentos para la predicación a musulmanes y cristianos. En este sentido, constituye un buen exponente del conocimiento del Corán y de la tradición musulmana en la Hispania medieval, pero también suministra información relevante sobre la difusión de algunos importantes escritos dominicanos de la segunda mitad del siglo XIII, tanto de orientación polemística como de carácter hagiográfico. La nueva edición del tratado que aquí se presenta ofrece novedades tanto en el establecimiento del texto como en la identificación de fuentes y viene precedida por un estudio en el que se propone una nueva hipótesis sobre su datación y autoría.
