Este livro abordou o tema da história do pensamento político dos intelectuais de uma pequena nação eslovaca na Europa Central na primeira metade do século XIX, que procuravam compreender os conceitos de Herder e Hegel, mas também os de outros intelectuais europeus formadores de opinião e, ao mesmo tempo, buscavam as suas próprias soluções para o futuro da nação eslovaca dentro da Hungria histórica, entre os eslavos e na Europa. Os intelectuais eslovacos da época não eram um grupo indiferenciado. Eles diferiam não apenas pela orientação política e social e pelo tipo de socialização, mas também pelas suas respectivas opiniões sobre a época do romantismo culminante, o ambiente geopolítico da Europa Central, a onda de nacionalismos concebidos com base na língua, na cultura, na etnia e no folclore, o nacionalismo territorial húngaro, a modernização civil da Áustria-Hungria e os resultados da Revolução de 1848-1849.
