Edukacja STEM jest jedną z nowych reform w edukacji naukowej, która zwiększa umiejętności naukowe i poznawcze uczniów. Edukacja STEM jest najlepiej nauczana poprzez strategie uczenia się oparte na problemach, ponieważ istnieją trzy rodzaje uczenia się, które przecinają PBL: uczenie się kognitywne, uczenie się treści i uczenie się oparte na współpracy. Te trzy rodzaje uczenia się stanowią ramy koncepcyjne, które ukierunkowały niniejsze badanie. Głównym celem tego badania jest zmierzenie, w jakim stopniu stosowanie strategii PBL w edukacji STEM zwiększa rozwój umiejętności XXI wieku u uczniów: umiejętności poznawczych, umiejętności współpracy i wiedzy merytorycznej? Uczestnicy badania składali się z dwóch grup: 112 nauczycieli i 1800 uczniów jedenastej klasy wybranych z siedmiu szkół w Zjednoczonych Emiratach Arabskich. W badaniu zastosowano metodę mieszaną z wykorzystaniem wielu narzędzi. Zastosowano kwestionariusz dla nauczycieli, który zawierał pytania otwarte i zamknięte. Osiągnięcia uczniów mierzono jakościowo za pomocą rubryk i ilościowo, zbierając wyniki uczniów z modułu robotyki. Ponadto postrzeganie przez uczniów zostało również zmierzone za pomocą ankiety z pytaniami zamkniętymi.
