Skin and Bones: The Boy Who Ran The Long Road to Hardin County, is a raw, atmospheric historical novel spanning nearly a century of American hardship, war, survival, and family legacy. It begins with William Harp, a boy carved by grief long before the Civil War ever reaches him. His childhood is shaped by sickness, loss, and the hard lessons of endurance. When his father dies, 'The house had always been small, but when sickness came... it shrank to the size of a coffin,' and William learns early that the world does not bend for suffering. After his mother’s death, he is sent to an abusive uncle whose strap and silence become the defining shadows of his youth. When the Civil War tears through his life, William is thrust into battle, capture, starvation, and the long march north. He endures the smoke, the grind, the dead count, the gates of neglect, and the sawmill accidents and hardships that follow him into adulthood. But the war is only one enemy. The greater danger is Cutter - a relentless scout whose presence grows from a whisper to a shadow that follows William for decades. Cutter circles, pressures, and escalates, becoming the embodiment of every fear William carried from childhood. Across marriage, fatherhood, hardship, and the slow rebuilding of a life, Cutter returns again and again, tightening the noose until William must finally stand against the man who has haunted him since the smoke of war.Yet the Harp story is only half of the legacy. The Tillmans carry their own history - a parallel line of hardship, migration, loss, and endurance that eventually intertwines with the Harps. Their story begins with Henry Tillman, a man worn down by thin soil, long winters, and the weight of ten children. His decline and death leave the family fractured, forcing his youngest son, George Washington Tillman, to grow up in the shadow of absence and the silence grief leaves behind. The Tillman chapters trace decades of struggle: estate sales, moves west, small mercies, hard winters, and the fragile moments that hold families together. When the Harps and Tillmans finally meet, their histories collide - two families shaped by suffering, endurance, and the quiet determination to survive what the world throws at them. Their union becomes the turning point that carries the story into the late 1800s and early 1900s, through fires, fairs, fevers, births, deaths, and the slow march of time that reshapes every generation.I wrote this book in the aftermath of my daughter’s terminal cancer diagnosis and passing. It is based on true family events, but many private moments, emotional truths, and unrecorded details are fictionally reconstructed - shaped to honor the people who lived these lives and to fill the silences history left behind. This is not a sentimental tribute, but a story told with unflinching, sometimes brutal honesty, blending fact with imagined truth to reveal the deeper legacy of what survived.A sweeping, intimate, and deeply human novel, Skin and Bones: The Boy Who Ran honors the Harp and Tillman families - and the moment when one life changed forever.

Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present.
