L’accesso ai servizi igienici di base, in particolare alle fognature, è una condizione fondamentale per la sopravvivenza e l’integrità umana. In assenza o insufficienza di sistemi igienico-sanitari, sorgono diversi problemi legati alla salute pubblica e all’ambiente. In Brasile, i servizi igienici di base sono in uno stato allarmante, con meno del 50% della popolazione che ha accesso a un sistema di raccolta delle acque reflue e a uno smaltimento finale appropriato dal punto di vista ambientale. Ciò è dovuto a una cattiva gestione delle risorse pubbliche, con bassi livelli di investimento, mancanza di strumenti di controllo e assenza di politiche pubbliche integrate. È quindi necessario sviluppare studi in questo settore per risolvere il problema dello smaltimento delle acque reflue. Questo studio ha valutato il destino degli effluenti urbani nella microregione dell’Alto Uruguai (AU), composta da 27 comuni.
