Unable to break into the tenured groves of academe, despite a solid and well-received doctoral dissertation, Chamberlin spent several decades of his life working as a historian, archivist, university teacher, lecturer, poet, essayist and writer of longer and shorter fictions while living in Manhattan, Germany, France, Italy, Washington DC and Greece. In 2001 he retired from an executive position at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC to move with his wife Lynn-Marie Smith to Key West, Florida to concentrate on a series of five novels revolving around the city of Berlin in the 20th century, one of which takes place in the Conch Republic, as the island of Key West is also known. His most recent books are Paris Now and Then: Memoirs, Opinions and a Companion to the City of Light for the Literate Traveler (2002, revised edition 2004), Mediterranean Sketches: Fictions, Memories and Metafictions (2005) and (with Nance Frank) Mario Sanchez: Once Upon a Way of Life (2006). Chamberlin also serves on the Durrell School of Corfu board of directors and faculty. The School has recently published his A Chronology of the Life and Times of Lawrence Durrell (2007).

  • Polishing the Silver
    Jennifer Chrystie
‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

  • One Kiss
    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

  • The Truth about A
    Maureen O'Shaughnessy
In his interpretation of Antigone, Seamus Heaney says, ‘Nobody can be sure they are always right.’ Maureen O’Shaughnessy’s The Truth about A further attends to this idea through various readings of the myth as portrayed by Sophocles, Brecht, Ted Hughes, Anne Carson and, most particularly, Euripides. Set in contemporary Sydney, among a fictional underworld family, The Truth abou...

  • The Time in Tavel
    Brewster Chamberlin
Brewster Chamberlin readily admits one of the great pieces of buona Fortuna in his life was the 14 months he spent with Lynn-Marie Smith in a small village in the South of France just northwest of the old walled city of Avignon. This sprightly memoir is the story of those deeply enriching and adventurous months in a landscape both enchanted and occasionally dangerous, filled wi...
