Sister Carrie (1900) by Theodore Dreiser follows the life of Carrie Meeber, a young woman who moves from a small Wisconsin town to Chicago in search of a better life. Struggling at first, she is drawn into relationships with men who offer her material comfort-first Charles Drouet, a salesman, and later George Hurstwood, a married manager who risks everything to be with her. While Hurstwood’s fortunes decline, Carrie rises to success as a stage actress in New York.
