La chimica bioinorganica è un campo che esamina il ruolo dei metalli in biologia. La chimica bioinorganica comprende lo studio sia di fenomeni naturali come il comportamento delle metalloproteine, sia di metalli introdotti artificialmente, compresi quelli non essenziali, in medicina e tossicologia. Molti processi biologici, come la respirazione, dipendono da molecole che rientrano nell’ambito della chimica inorganica. La disciplina comprende anche lo studio di modelli inorganici o mimici che imitano il comportamento delle metalloproteine. Come combinazione di biochimica e chimica inorganica, la chimica bioinorganica è importante per chiarire le implicazioni delle proteine di trasferimento degli elettroni, i legami e l’attivazione dei substrati, la chimica del trasferimento di atomi e gruppi, nonché le proprietà dei metalli nella chimica biologica.
