Questi concetti sono ancora validi oggi, tranne per il fatto che il termine 'stato di ossidazione' ha sostituito 'valenza primaria' e il termine 'numero di coordinazione' ha sostituito 'valenza secondaria'. Werner aveva riconosciuto che un sale di metallo di transizione poteva formare un composto complesso in cui lo ione metallico si legava a una serie di gruppi che non dovevano necessariamente essere gli anioni contrapposti originariamente presenti nel sale. L’orientamento nello spazio di questi gruppi legati al metallo avrebbe portato il complesso ad avere una particolare struttura geometrica. I composti di coordinazione hanno sempre rappresentato una sfida per la chimica inorganica. Gli scienziati che si sono occupati di coordinazione dei composti sono Kooser, Lewis, Sidgwick, ecc.
